HUMAN RESOURCES - The Melting Pot
It's About Dollars and Cents
Teddy Pierre shares his viewpoint on
Diversity in Private Clubs Magazine's July
August 2007 issue.
CAREER DEVELOPMENT- Become A Key Contender in the Job Market
Knowing Your Own Diversity Attrributes
Don't minimize who you are or what makes you
a unique individual, whether you are a person
of color, bi-lingual, handicapped, baby
boomer, gay, transgender or over 60.
In a nation that is becoming more diverse
with each passing day, your unique diverse
characteristics are a sorely needed commodity
in helping businesses reach out and retain
its growing and changing customer base. Just
in Tampa alone, with a population of 322,296,
with 43 percent of the population consisting
of Hispanic and African-American people, we
have become one of the diverse areas in the
nation.
When you think about career development, it
is about knowing what your assets are to make
you marketable in today's business
environment. Knowing what your diversity
attributes is can help you become a key
contender in the market place.
For example, most people do not add the many
languages they speak on their resumes. If
you speak, German, French, Philippine,
Russian, Spanish or Swahili, these are all
plusses. Remember, most employers now do
business on a global level and may also be in
communities where people of these languages
make up a percentage of the population.
Don't sell yourself short by omitting your
diversity qualities; they could put you
closer to getting the job you want.
DIVERSE PROFESSIONALS - Get Connected, Get In
The Information Network for Diverse Professionals
The premiere online resource for diverse
professionals in Tampa Bay to find news,
events, and
information on what matters to them.
In addition, the site features Black, Latino
and Women-owned businesses, as well as provides
profiles of corporations, professional and
business organizations, and
not-for-profit groups.
Opportunity for interaction.....Opportunity for tension and conflict
A report from the U.S. Census Bureau,
released on 5/17/07, stated that people of
color now account for one third of the
country's population.
This only serves to emphasize the growing
diversity in the entering workforce and the
workplace overall. Whether diversity is
approached as a human relations issue or a
business concept, the fact is that the
demographics of our community are changing,
and the results are affecting our workplaces.
These effects are seen as questions arise
around language, generational differences and
family structure, as well as the more
traditional culture, ethnicity and gender.
Employees today will be working closely with
those who are different, people who live
different realities and thus, have different
perspectives.
As the opportunity for interaction between
these diverse individuals increases, so does
the opportunities for conflict and tension.
Equipping employees with the skills and
resources to successfully manage and
capitalize on these changes will translate
into success within the organization, as well as
with outside clients and vendors.
An organization that seeks to make the most
of its diversity will work strategically to
ensure that everyone feels valued, and is
represented, at all levels of the company.
It will also work to ensure that company
policies and procedures reflect this ongoing
commitment.
As a culture of inclusion is created,
diversity will become more than just a human
relations issue. It will prove to be a
business necessity.

Losing the best employees to bigger companies
that can provide better
employee benefits (such as health insurance)
is an issue many small- and
medium-sized businesses face.
To recruit and retain the best employees in
today's marketplace, you must offer a
competitive employee benefits
package--especially one that offers
affordable health insurance and a retirement
plan such as a 401(k).
Because Oasis administers these employee
benefits programs, our clients and their
employees can simply relax and reap the
rewards while we take care of the details.
If you want to maximize your human
resource capital and achieve excellent
success, or if you have any questions about
any of
the topics covered in the newsletter, call
us.
In the August/September issue of the Pascall Palette, we will discuss Performance Management. Until next time.....
